Loving your Media observations Lopo. IMHO all the papers need to do is start monetizing online better and stop thinking that the market has to fit the model rather than the other way around.

I still buy a paper copy of the Guardian regularly and would hate to see the death of the newstand

Great post Lopo. Its great to see you digital boys engaged in called 'old media'.

But seriously rather like most high street retailers these guys are in full flight and are running their businesses for cash. I dont think the strategy (in the FT case) is to push people to subs i think rather its a 'milking' strategy. They have calculated that with advertising revenues in the toilet they can afford to lose a few (or many) purchasers with price rises. For the first time in a long time cover price revenue is more important than ad revenues. Hence the price rises.

As we have always argued newspapers ahould be rewarding loyalty not punishing it! FT are gambling here that they have a strong brand that is particulary relevant in challenging economic times such as these and that people will pay more. But i agree with you its a heavy price to pay when so much qulaity content is avavilable out there for free (or for less). Lets see how it plays out.

I see your point and I have stumbled across this discussion on several blogs.

Some say that total No. of medals won determines the winner of the Olympics - some say that No. of gold medals won determines the winner.

Is I see it it, it is a matter of angle.

I have found a widget (Olympic medals per head) that shows medals won per inhabitants and medals won per million dollar GDP, in addition to medals per country.

This gives another view of who is "winning" the Olympics.

I think you might like it:-)

Check it out:

It's free and simple and it can be embedded to your blog
